Sherman’s New Writing Event a Great Success

The Grand Final of The Sherman’s new writing event ScriptSlam which was held earlier this month has been hailed as a great success and an important boost for new writing and fresh talent. Sherman Nation, The Sherman’s resident company of young actors, performed six excerpts of new writing which have made it into the final after winning their individual rounds at monthly ScriptSlams. A panel of distinguished judges were on hand to offer feedback and advice, but in the end it was the sell-out audience who decided on Kit Lambert’s The Custom House as the winner.

Kit describes The Custom House as a satire of our attitudes towards Europe and the passive role of the ‘Everyman’ figure in the politics that affect us all. Kit says, “To see a piece of your writing performed is fantastic for any writer, but for new writers who are just starting out it is invaluable.  Winning the audience vote at ScriptSlam made all those hours in front of a computer screen worthwhile.”

Over 47 scripts were submitted to Dinos Aristidou, Education, Youth and Participation Manager, of which 15 were showcased in various ScriptSlams. Dinos says, “There’s such an enormous wealth of writing talent in Wales and we are very happy to be harnessing it here at The Sherman. Our company of emerging artists, Sherman Nation, also deserve great credit for showing incredible dedication and talent.” Various Sherman Nation members have exciting projects lined up following their stint with SwitchedOn Sherman including Alison John who will be performing in Hijinx Theatre’s Spinning the Round Table this Autumn (the tour of which includes The Sherman) and Danielle Taylor who is performing in NFW at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Scripts are now being accepted for the new round of ScriptSlams which begins on Thursday 13 October at 8pm. Budding playwrights are encouraged to send in 10 pages of script to Dinos Aristidou, The Sherman, Senghennydd Road, CF24 4YE
