Swansea City Opera has produced a wonderfully accessible performance of The Elixir of Love (L’Elisir d’Amore), which has been translated into English, set in Wales and is coming to The Riverfront on Thursday 5 February at 7.30pm. Following highly successful productions of ‘The Daughter of the Regiment’ and ‘The Magic Flute’, Swansea City Opera now bring this timeless and charming comic opera to life, updating it to the 1920’s and setting it in the beautiful village of Portmeirion, North Wales. Originally written by Gaetano Donizetti, The Elixir of Love is a tale about a shy young farmer who loves a beautiful landowner. She possesses money, education and sophistication, he doesn’t. They are worlds apart and his unrequited love looks like it will never be reciprocated. That is until the day a travelling salesman breezes into the village selling a magic elixir. The score is full of memorable tunes including ‘Una Furtiva Lagrima’, the aria that catapulted Pavarotti to fame. Tickets are priced at £10, £15 and £17, with reductions available.
