Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama have announced Opera 360, a unique online programme designed to help develop the love and future of opera and musical theatre and to create a platform for innovation.Starting in September 2022, Opera 360 will be an exclusive, industry-led, digital course that invites opera lovers, arts professionals and students alike to gain unrivalled, behind the scenes knowledge of the industry with expert guidance given by those who make opera. It will offer detailed investigation into both the artistic and administrative practices of the global opera business. Opera 360 short courses are for anyone who has a deep love of opera and wants a strong connection with opera that goes beyond appreciation whatever their stage of life. In addition to the short courses, the College is launching a full Opera 360 Masters, designed to develop the skills of those wanting to work in the industry in non- performance roles and which incorporates all the modules in the shorter courses. This postgraduate course can be taken over two to five years. Applications are available through UCAS. As an online initiative Opera 360 will be available to people from all over the UK and internationally. The renowned RWCMD will draw upon its conservatoire approach, providing immersive, personal experiences to deliver world-class education. An inside perspective will also be gained from opera performers and illustrious top industry practitioners from the international world of opera. James Lea, Course Leader of Opera 360 said “We wanted to offer a course that allows people to see how opera is brought to the stage. We have extensive contacts throughout the industry, who are excited by the possibility to share their knowledge. The myriad formats in which Opera is produced, and its ability to reach diverse audiences, are subjects worthy of serious study. The power of Opera to tell stories new and old is unrivalled.” The sessions will focus on different aspects of opera including the roles of the director, actor and designer as well as key offstage elements such as leadership and administration. The relevance of opera and how opera can be used to engage communities will also be explored alongside many other critical issues facing the industry today. Opera 360 is in association with the David Seligman Opera School at RWCMD. It aims to provide a world-class training environment for those wishing to pursue a career in opera working in partnership with Welsh National Opera.
