Knockout Drama Packs a Punch!

Facing Up

Made in Wales , , February 17, 1992
If there is one thing the downfall of many a boxer has taught us, it is that often the most serious challengers are outside the ring.

Lloyd is undoubtedly able to do the business when he steps into the ring, but it is when he gets out that he faces the harder blows. First of all, while preparing for the biggest fight of his career, he is confronted by his girlfriend, Vicki who tells him some unpleasant truths that are hardly the pre-match preparation that his manager Eddie had in mind.

It is a very clever piece of writing, both funny and challenging, and well played out by the five actors of the Made in Wales stage company.
Lloyd, played by Jams Thomas, a boxer at the height of his powers, is, ironically, unable to avenge a sexual assault on his girlfriend, because
the perpetrator is his mate, and a heavyweight to boot.

It is a play about priorities, whether Lloyd thinks it is worth fighting for his girlfriend, risking his fighting career and losing his so- called friend.

Acting honours must go to Laurence Allan, who plays the fiery manager Eddie for all he is worth, and to Helen Gwyn, as Vicki, who truly sets the cat among the pigeons in this all-male preserve.

The play is a product of the writing workshops run by Made in Wales at Theatr Clwyd and on the evidence of this performance long may they continue.
