ImMortal 2

No Fit State Circus , Barry waterfront , May 5, 2005
TAKING my three-year-old godson Zack to the circus was shattering. And that's because of the all-out action and new sounds there rather than anything he did.

Entering the silver spaceship tent, all we could see was a lone performer in shadow and in repose, swinging a miniature pram from his Doc Marten-booted foot.

Later highlights of this sensory overload included luminous ballerinas in tutus and neon rollerboots and a synchronised swimming sequence with performers wearing modest costumes, frilly swim caps and ruby smiles as they "swam" down silk sheets.

Discreet changes carried out on the podiums transformed gypsy girls into elegant glamour pusses.

Brilliant live music ranged from manic fairground tunes and riotous dancing to beautiful singing.

The flying trapeze was so hypnotic it was hard not to crick your neck.

This is a promenade show, so the performance combusts above, behind and around you. For adults, tiredness adds to the other-wordliness, but Zack battled to keep his eyelids open after an hour, just to see what could possibly come next.

NoFit State Circus is at Barry Waterfront until Saturday.
