Energy and Emotion

Bitter Suite

Diversions, Dance Company of Wales , Wales Millennium Centre , January 24, 2009
Bitter Suite by Diversions, Dance Company of Wales In an atmospheric and packed Dance House, Diversions debuted their new work 'Bitter Suite' a mixture of intoxicating choreography that juxtaposes emotion with dance, and enchanted the audience with this confidently inventive work

An energetic mix of passion, energy and elegance, 'Bitter Suite' includes works by Diversions founder Roy Campbell-Moore, alongside new pieces by acclaimed choreographers Stijn Celis and DV8 founder Nigel Charnock.

With standing room only the audience remained captivated as the conviction and variety of 'Bitter Suite' stimulates, treating the spectator to an evocative and sensual display of contrasting works.

Hinterland, Form and Lunatic captivate both body and mind, and combine musical genres from classical to jazz, exploring the realms of human emotion through dance.

Campbell-Moore's Hinterland, is set to the sensuous tones of welsh composer Alun Hoddinott's Welsh Dance suites and sets the tone of contrast as the dancers journey through a spectrum of emotions that both inspire and enchant. From humour, to uncomfortable anxiety the audience remained spellbound as Hinterland, executed to perfection explored the different characteristics of human nature.

Exploding onto the stage against the backdrop of James Brown's famous Give it Up >>Form<< by Celis combines the elegance of contemporary dance with edgier tribal aspects. The five sections of the work each seeking to explore a different physical idea, working from the group as a whole to the individual, and using the written word amongst the dance to transpose its intentions onto our psyche.

Lunatic, is an intoxicating look into the work of dreams, of romance and of madness drawing on the dance styles of the 1950's fused with modern creative interpretation of a world within which lunacy reigns. With the dancers completely atuned to one another this funny, but sensual piece strips down to the bare facets of the human form, exploring the ironies of identity, within romance anguish and humour.

'Bitter Suite', is captivating, combining energy and emotion and demonstrates the superb chemistry that radiates across the diversions dancers. Both individually and as an ensemble, they radiate passion and conviction and 'Bitter Suite' is a testament to the increasing popularity and presence of Diversions on the national and European stage.
