Summing It Up

A Personal Best , Theatre 2007-2019 , June 3, 2020
Summing It Up by A Personal Best On March 12th I was at a reading of “Trusting Unicorns” by Lucy Gough. The play was a multi-media account of the life of Brenda Chamberlain. Intended for production by National Theatre Wales the commission was rescinded after the departure of John McGrath for Manchester.

It was a warm performance in the intimacy of the Studio. Sue Jones-Davies took the lead and Keiron Self and Francois Pandolfo played the roles of the men in Brenda Chamberlain's life.

The following week saw the onset of the end, the curtailing of tours and the abandonment of openings. The arts, and society in general, took action prior to the UK government announcement on March 23nd.

We need tasks that are regular.

Over the months of April and May I trawled the considerable body of reviews that I had written. I ordered them in an alphabetical list, annotated and selected a short-list. I extracted two paragraphs that felt as if they got to the productions' heart.

Many of the companies exist no more. In the unknown configuration of 2021 others may also go.

In considering a suitable illustration I thought of this Caspar David Friedrich in Leipzig. It is allegorical, its subject and title “the Stages of Life.”
