Arts Arrogance

Michael Baker claimed, in your arts pages of March 9, that discussions with the Writers Guild of Great Britain had given the Arts Council of Wales confidence to proceed with plans for a new writing company in Cardiff.

Is it possible for anyone to get it more wrong?

The Writers Guild of Great Britain has been opposed to the Arts Council's plans since they were announced last year. Not only do these plans mean the closure of two well respected theatre companies, but a convenient cut of £90,000 to the promotion, development and production of new writing theatre in Wales.

The Writers' Guild of Great Britain passed a vote of no confidence in the ACW at a national level in November, and has since called upon the National Assembly of Wales to cease funding the quango.

Let us be clear. The writers of Wales do not want to lose Cwmni Theatr Dalier Sylw and Made in Wales Theatre Company. What we want to get rid of is an undemocratic arts council whose arrogance astounds us, and whose lack of support for new work is gradually killing creativity in Wales.

It's time to get rid of the Arts Council of Wales, and the Writers' Guild of Great Britain for one, will be happy to see it go.
