Theatre Jobs may go to cut deficit

About a dozen jobs could be lost at cash-strapped Clwyd Theatr Cymru as it attempts to claw back thousands of pounds.

The Mold based theatre has accumulated a deficit of £800,000. This is despite the Arts Council of Wales wiping out £1.3 million of debts three years ago and providing the company with an annual grant.

Flintshire County Council , which owns and runs the theatre, has been told by the district auditor that it has to reduce the current deficit by £200,000 per year over the next four years.

A restructuring proposal has been drawn up in a bid to reach the target. It has been distributed to staff unions for consultation.

It has been reported that Clwyd Theatr Cymru may have to shut its two theatres in August to try to make savings, but the theatre has said that it is just following what it has done in previous years.

It is believed that managers want to implement the cuts by the autumn but staff are eligible to two months' notice. Many are currently on tour with Under Milk Wood and the Threepenny Opera.

The organisation shed a number of staff during the reorganisation of Local government in March 1996. No-one was available at the theatre to comment on the crisis

Director Terry Hands, a former director with the Royal Shakespeare Company, who took up the Welsh post three years ago, is in New York , where he is directing a production of Macbeth, until the end of May.
