WYESIDE’S NEW SEASON PACKED WITH RETURNING STARS

WYESIDE’S NEW SEASON PACKED WITH RETURNING STARS Wyeside has announced its live show programme for the first half of 2007 – and has extended its innovative ‘free tickets for 18s & under’ scheme following the success of the first four months.

11 of the 25 live shows in the autumn 2006 season offered a free ticket for anyone aged 18 or under with every ticket paid for. The promotion was an instant success and has seen the number of young people attending live events at Wyeside almost double, compared to the same period the previous year. This spring, a further 11 shows – comprising comedy, music, classic and contemporary drama – will feature the offer.

Guy Roderick, Director of Wyeside, said, “Wyeside has always been committed to keeping ticket prices as low as possible for young people. We’re delighted to see that this policy is paying off, and that more people are coming to see live performance as a result. Already we’ve seen other venues in Wales adopt this innovative policy, and I predict that more will follow.”

Wyeside’s theatre programme features several companies who have made regular appearances in Builth Wells. Following The Third Man and Get Carter, Red Shift return with Vertigo (Saturday 24 March), the third in their series of adaptations of books best known as famous films. Famously filmed in the 1950s by Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo is a psychological thriller about an ex-policeman asked to shadow a friend’s beautiful wife to uncover her secrets.

Mappa Mundi present Daniel Defoe’s classic Moll Flanders in their bawdy, rollicking style (Wednesday 28 March), while Miracle Theatre turn HG Wells’ influential adventure The Time Machine (Wednesday 21 February) into a vibrant piece of musical theatre for all the family. Finally, Builth Wells Community Arts return with Laurie Lee’s warm and poignant story of childhood, Cider with Rosie (Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 March).

The life of Dylan Thomas is explored in Dylan in America (Saturday 10 February). The play by Gwynne Edwards is based on the letters written home from America by Thomas, tracing the poet’s inner anxieties, his confusion about his love life and his ambivalence towards Wales and America. It is performed by Thomas expert Peter Read, who has previously taken the play to five star reviews at the 2004 and 2005 Edinburgh Festivals.
