![]() Mappa Mundi Theatre Company’s latest production Moll Flanders tours to 17 prestigious venues throughout Wales this spring, starting with Theatr Mwldan on February 22nd. Moll Flanders is adapted from Daniel Defoe’s classic Eighteenth Century novel. Defoe’s novel is a classic piece of social commentary on the place of women in society. It can be seen as the tale of an ingenious, self-reliant woman and her struggle for independence. Mappa Mundi’s tale of Moll’s extraordinary life is made relevant and accessible to modern audiences and balances the darker moments of the story with ludicrous comedy, a fast paced script and hilarious character acting. The challenge of playing Moll is taken on by one of Wales’ most striking and versatile young actresses, Mali Tudno Jones, who has enjoyed great success since graduating from the London Academy. A new face to Mappa Mundi, Mali’s feisty, fiery and gutsy Moll will certainly have an interesting tale to tell. In casting Mali in this major classic role, Mappa Mundi can be seen to have created exciting performance opportunities for young actors returning to work in Wales. Moll Flanders is directed by Mappa Mundi founder member Lynne Seymour, who also directed Mappa Mundi’s all male version of The Taming of The Shrew, Twelfth Night and Richard III. As well as directing, acting and running her own business, she is also a busy mother of twins and has recently starred on ITV’s Fit for a Change as a fitness guru. Lynne therefore has ample credentials for making the challenges faced by an Eighteenth Century heroine resonate with the women of today! The script is by well-known Welsh writer Keiron Self, a founder member of Mappa Mundi who also adapted 2006’s hit production of Canterbury Tales for the stage. Richard Nichols (Scrum 4) and Lee Mengo (Canterbury Tales) are two familiar faces in the cast whose deadpan comedy should raise plenty of laughs. For fourteen years Mappa Mundi have staged popular adaptations of classic tales. With some of the best comedy actors in Wales, the company has established a strong reputation for invention and versatility. Moll Flanders is the second of Mappa Mundi’s co-productions with Theatr Mwldan and Creu Cymru, funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Assembly Government under the Arts Outside Cardiff Scheme. Their partnership is helping to bring high quality touring theatre to a wider audience across Wales. Moll Flanders will be Mappa Mundi’s most lavish production to date. The full period costumes are by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, a costume designer and historical expert who has worked as costume and set consultant on Oliver Stone’s Alexander. Atmospherically and inventively staged, with an original score by Peter Knight, Moll Flanders bears all the Mappa Mundi trademarks that keep audiences coming back for more. ..........
