The Met opens its doors to the public
|
The newly refurbished Metropole Cultural and Conference Centre will be opening its doors to the public on Thursday 25 January for a special day of performances, workshops and activities.
The ‘Celebrate our Opening’ event will see the Met welcome visitors, groups and schools, who can sample a variety of drop-in sessions throughout the day to see what the Met can offer.
The drop-in sessions will be held between 10am and 4pm, and will include story telling, dance and drama performances, as well as arts and crafts workshops, and performances of the Hurdy Gurdy and Welsh pipes. Everyone is welcome to come along to the free event, although group bookings in advance are essential.
The Met will also be hosting other workshop and activities days over the next few months, including Sonnets and Sweet Chocolates on Saturday 10 February and Story Telling Workshops for children in the February half term holidays.
The Met will be hosting high profile performances over the next few weeks including, Ruby Tuner, Walter Trout and Abertillery Youth Drama and Musical Society’s production of ‘Summer Holiday.’
The Metropole Theatre was originally a Dance and Market Hall, constructed in 1892, by Charles John Seaborne.
With the support of European funding, the building has been refurbished into a state-of-the-art cultural and conference centre, retaining many of the original Victorian architectural features. The ground floor of the centre now accommodates the Abertillery and District Museum.
The newly refurbished venue provides the community with a range of conference facilities and a multi-functional auditorium to be utilised as a performing area.
Councillor Dennis Owens, Executive Member for Creating Jobs and Skills, said: “The Metropole is a wonderful attribute for the area, and the open day will provide the public with an opportunity to get a taster of what the venue will offer over the coming months. With such a variety of things to do, I am sure that anyone who visits the Metropole will agree that it is a unique regeneration project combining cultural and conference facilities for the local community and for visitors to the area.”
The ‘Celebrate our Opening’ event is free of charge. Group bookings in advance are essential. For bookings and further information on events coming to the Met, please contact the Metropole Cultural and Conference Centre on 01495 322510.
