Two Award Winning Welsh Companies Unite

Two Award Winning Welsh Companies Unite The Sherman Theatre’s Acting Out Cardiff students unite with ex Hollyoaks and Pobol y Cwm actor Bernard Latham’s company UCAN Productions this January to produce a unique performance with sighted, partially sighted and blind young actors titled Insight Out.

The award-winning Acting Out Cardiff scheme is The Sherman Theatre’s alternative education initiative where teenagers who aren’t thriving in a traditional classroom environment have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom in a hands-on professional arts environment. At the end of the 2 year course they gain a BTEC in Performing Arts.

UCAN Productions, run by former Hollyoaks and Pobl Y Cwm star Bernard Latham and his wife Jane, helps young people with visual impairments in Wales participate in the arts. UCAN recently won the National Lottery’s Children’s Champion Award.

Insight Out will see 40 young people – sighted, partially sighted and blind, work together for an intense week of rehearsals to create Insight Out.

Acting Out Co-ordinator Jessica Naish comments:

“Insight Out is unique in the sense that it gives two groups of often ‘excluded’ young people a chance to get together to find common ground and create a play. It’s an ambitious project but very exciting – and Acting Out are thrilled to be working with the expert guidance of Bernard Latham.”

Bernard Latham who played Mr Cunningham in popular Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, adds:

“Everyone at UCAN Productions and RNIB Cymru is delighted to be working with Acting Out Cardiff and the Sherman Theatre. It's a wonderful opportunity for the young people to work in a professional environment and make new friends.”

The young people will work together for a week of intense rehearsals culminating in two performances on Friday 26 January at 6.30pm and 8pm. Tickets are free and can be reserved from The Sherman Theatre Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
