SALE OF COSTUMES & ACCESSORIES

SALE OF COSTUMES & ACCESSORIES On Saturday 17 February [12.30PM – 4.00PM] Gwent Theatre will be putting on a slightly different show than it’s used to, as the Melville Theatre in Abergavenny stages a sale of top quality vintage and historic dress. The sale includes hundreds of items of dress and accessories from every decade of the 20th century, and features some designs more usually seen at Sotheby’s. For example, hiding in the middle of the rails are an embroidered jacket and a 1940s little black tailored couture dress by the House of Paquin – one of the most important names in fashion in the early 20th century, and a forerunner of Coco Chanel.

Other items in the sale also very interesting. There are:

Original 1950s ball gowns with corseted bodices and full tulle skirts
Rare 1930s silk crepe evening dresses and evening capes
Original 1940s day and cocktail dresses
Original 1960s mini dresses
Jackie Kennedy style 1960s tailored suits
Audrey Hepburn style 1960s evening dresses
1970s dresses and suits
Circa 1900 Belle Époque capes and mantles
Wedding dresses from different decades
Military coats, capes and uniforms – including some very rare women’s military dress from the 1940s
Also shoes, bags, hats, and evening gloves from all eras

The collection of dress came originally from the now closed Redgrave Theatre in Farnham. The clothes are in very good condition despite their years, the only mark of their heritage being the occasional tag revealing the name of the character who wore them in ‘Measure for Measure’ at the Redgrave.
