A practical approach to teaching Shakespeare
Sat 28 April 9am – 3.30pm

St Donats Arts Centre in partnership with the international school based at St Donats, Atlantic College is hosting two one-day courses this spring by two of Britain’s leading theatre companies, Cardboard Citizens and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The courses have been specially designed for anyone with a personal or professional interest in exploring some of the techniques and approaches to theatre as well as in teaching or directing Shakespeare’s texts.

The first course focuses on Theatre of the Oppressed - the ensemble of techniques and approaches to theatre pioneered by the Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal. The techniques, however, have wide ranging applications both within arts environments and beyond, from the council chamber to the union meeting, from the therapeutic group to the development charity, from the office to the homeless people's hostel. The course will be led by Adrian Jackson, a leading practitioner in Forum Theatre and director of Cardboard Citizens, the UK’s only homeless people’s professional theatre company.

Tickets are £85 and lunch and refreshments are included.

The second course is led by the Royal Shakespeare Company and is designed to explore practical ways of teaching Shakespeare in a rehearsal, workshop or classroom environment.

The aim is to find different ways to stimulate a greater understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of Shakespeare in an atmosphere that is both exciting and rewarding.

The day will include adaptations of rehearsal room approaches designed to give Shakespeare’s verse a physical and vocal life. These exercises will encourage a strong, personal relationship to the plays. Materials and resources will be provided.

If you are considering taking part and would like to discuss the content of the day further, please ring Dave Booker on 01446 799280 or John Pengelly at St Donats Arts Centre’s Box Office on 01446 799100. Tickets are £45.
