Using only Charles Dickens’ extraordinary words and a chameleon ensemble of eight actors, leading playwright Neil Bartlett's powerful stage version of this much-loved story brings its settings and characters to thrilling theatrical life. From its opening image of little Pip, alone on the windswept marshes, to the haunted darkness of mad Miss Haversham's cobweb-strewn lair, this brand-new adaptation especially commissioned by Aberystwyth Arts Centre takes its audience on a journey right to the heart of Dickens’ great exploration of childhood terrors and hopes - and of adult dreams and regrets.
Neil Bartlett is one of the country's leading theatre-makers; his previous adaptations have been staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre as well as regional theatres across Britain and America. His recent production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist received rave reviews demonstrating his close affinity with Dickens’ work.
‘I really can't recommend this show too highly. A great novel has been transformed into stunning theatre’ Daily Telegraph on Oliver Twist.
The production is directed by award winning director Alan Lyddiard, who was until last year Artistic Director of Northern Stage Ensemble based in Newcastle. His recent productions which toured to Wales included Animal Farm and George Orwell’s 1984 and he is known for the freshness and inventiveness of his work.
Neil Bartlett and Alan Lyddiard have been brought together to work on this project by Aberystwyth Arts Centre who are producing the tour. As the main regional Arts Centre for Mid and West Wales, and a major centre for arts development in Wales, the Arts Centre has a long history of producing both community and professional shows, mainly for its own theatre spaces. However thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Wales through their ‘Arts Outside Cardiff’ scheme, the venue is able to take this production on tour throughout Wales, where performances will be given in Aberystwyth, Newtown, Brecon, Cardigan, Bangor, Newport and Swansea. It’s a major new development for the venue, and hopefully the start of a new strand of work for the future.
