A play by one of the great masters of comedy in Western literature will embark on a tour of Wales’ main theatre venues, as well as one performance in London, next month.Cariad Mr Bustl (Mr Bustl’s Lover) is a translation of Le Misanthrope ou l’Atrabilaire amoureux by the seventeenth century French dramatist, Molière. The play is widely regarded as his most refined masterpiece and the translation is by the prolific Welsh author and dramatist, Gareth Miles. Described as a comedy of manners Cariad Mr Bustl marks the end of a season of four classical plays by the Welsh National Touring Company – Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru. “To date the season, which kicked off with Saunders Lewis’ Esther followed by Samuel Beckett’s Diweddgan and a stage adaptation of Islwyn Ffowc Elis’ renowned novel Cysgod y Cryman, has attracted audiences exceeding 12,000 people,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Marketing Manager,” Elwyn Williams. “Cariad Mr Bustl will also most certainly strike a cord with our growing and faithful audiences,” he added. Rather than keeping to the original French Court Cariad Mr Bustl is set at the 1920s and revolves around the courting of a wealthy and attractive young widow by her various suitors. The plot concerns man’s attempt to bring morality into a corrupt world with the main characters in dispute concerning the right to voice one’s opinion whatever the consequences. The result gives rise to much visual and verbal comedy. “Molière successfully combined elements of the slapstick comedy of the French Commedia del’Arte with the more sophisticated comedy of his day,” said Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Assistant Artistic Director, Judith Roberts. “Although Le Misanthrope, with its high moral content, caused quite a stir when first staged in 1666 it has survived the passage of time and is Molière best remembered work,” she added. Cariad Mr Bustl will be staged in; • Sherman Theatre, Cardiff on Thursday and Friday, 3-4 Mai, 2007. • The Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea, on Thursday and Friday, 10–11 May, 2007. • Theatr Gwynedd, Bangor, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 15–18, May, 2007. • The Bloomsbury Theatre, London, on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. • The Aberystwyth Arts Centre, on Friday and Saturday, 1-2 June, 2007. • Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. • Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, on Friday and Saturday, 8–9 June, 2007. All performances start at 7.30pm. Cariad Mr. Bustl’s 10-member cast includes Huw Garmon, who played Hedd Wyn in the Oscar nominated film of the same name, and other stage and screen accomplished actors such as Llion Williams, Rhian Morgan, Jonathan Nefydd.and Mirain Haf. “Although Cariad Mr. Bustl brings our season of classics to a head it’s also a first in many respects,” added Elwyn Williams. “It’s a brand new translation and it’s the first Molière production for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru – but above all it’s a great deal of fun,” he said. |
