Contender comes to Cardiff A new musical based on Welsh boxing legend Tommy Farr that has opened to standing ovations in Swansea comes to The Sherman Theatre, Cardiff next week.

Contender is the rags to riches story of Rhondda-born Tommy Farr and his infamous World Title fight against the legendary Joe Louis at the Yankee Stadium, New York in 1937.

A wealthy man when he retired from his initial boxing career, Tommy Farr returned to the ring when facing bankruptcy at the age of 37. In a fight which captivated Wales, Farr fought bravely and held on for 15 rounds, with Louis unable to bring Farr down. Joe Louis won eventually on points.

Contender is presented by the Wales Theatre Company, and follows the success of the 2005 hit musical Amazing Grace, also written by Mal Pope.
