“Matthew’s Passion” Created by Theatr Ffynnon

Directed by Chris Durnall

“This Is Wrong, Birds Should Fly”

Theatr Ffynnon is the only theatre company in Wales working solely with adults with learning difficulties, placing them at the centre of activities, involving them as creators, performers and decision makers. Theatr Ffynnon currently works across 5 local authorities (Monmouthshire, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Powys & Merthyr Tydfil) & has up to 100 members.

Matthew’s Passion is by far the biggest project we have undertaken to date, it is a huge task for the company and its members with up-to 57 people on stage, including pupils with learning difficulties from Ysgol Penmaes, Brecon.

This unique & exciting production has been commissioned by Theatr Brycheiniog in celebration of its 10th Anniversary, and is supported by The Arts Outside of Cardiff Fund (The Arts Council of Wales & The Welsh Assembly Government). The production is also supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund & British Waterways “Brecon Gateway to Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal”.

Matthew’s Passion:

“Twelve-year-old Matthew finds an injured bird down by the canal. The bird becomes his friend and his obsession.

As the bird begins to recover its natural instinct to fly, Matthew begins to dream of flying, to wonder what it would be like to stretch out his arms and rise high above his problems down below.

He begins to wish that he could fly, to dream of open spaces and warmer climes. Then one day he meets a trickster, a magician, a man of the world who teaches him that anything is possible…”

Musical Director, Chris O’Connor,
Set & Costume Design by Mary Drummond.
Lighting Design by Geraint Thomas, Technical Manager, Theatr Brycheiniog.

A professional production with community actors and pupils from Ysgol Penmaes, Brecon.
