Award Winning Dance Theatre Company Return to Cardiff
|
The award-winning Phoenix Dance Theatre return to Cardiff this May with an outstanding mixed bill from international choreographers on Friday 25 May at The Sherman Theatre.
Phoenix Dance Theatre recently won the highly prestigious Company Prize for Outstanding Repertoire (Modern) in the 2006 Critic’s Circle National Dance Awards at an glittering event in London attended by stars of the dance world including ballerina Darcy Bussell, Strictly Come Dancing Judge Arlene Phillips and Strictly Ballroom star Lionel Blair.
Recently appointed Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, Javier De Frutos comments:
“Quite a few people have asked me since my appointment, “how is it going with Phoenix” – well, apparently very well!”
De Frutos leads the programme with Los Picadores. De Frutos recently won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreographer for the recent West End hit musical Cabaret. Los Picadores uses the expertise of a fight director to create a piece centred around a carnal struggle between men and women.
Swansea born choreographer Henri Oguike also features in the varied programme with Signal, a powerful piece driven by a soundtrack of Japanese Taiko drums and traditional Japanese music.
Harmonica Breakdown and a new commission from Brazilian born choreographer Henrique Rodovalho complete programme. Harmonica Breakdown is set to blues music and is a revival premiere of Jane Dudley’s 1938 masterpiece that was created as a direct result to the Depression in America.
Phoenix Dance Theatre then presents a new commissioned piece set to an eclectic score of rhythmic Brazilan music from samba to Electronica. Choreographer Henrique Rodovalho has a background in martial arts and uses this to create this contemporary and urban piece.
Phoenix Dance Company come to The Sherman on Friday 25 May for one night only. Tickets are £13.50 (£11 Reductions) and can be booked from The Sherman Theatre Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
