SEA OF BONES

SEA OF BONES BEAUTY AND HORROR COMBINED IN MARK BRUCE’S SEA OF BONES

Diversions Dance House welcomes The Mark Bruce Company to Cardiff on Tuesday 29 May (7.45) as they present Sea of Bones, a major new work for seven dancers. First performed to sell out crowds at Merlin Theatre (Frome, Somerset) and Exeter Phoenix in 2006, this new full-length work will be performed as part of the Horizons Dance Festival, taking place in key venues throughout South Wales over the next six weeks.

Diversions is delighted to be providing a stage for Sea of Bones, particularly as the work has a strong personal link to Wales’ National Dance Company. Diversions dancer Cris Tandy dances while on sabbatical from the company; Elizabeth Mischler stars after dancing with the company to critical acclaim as part of its esteemed UK Exposure tour this spring, while Diversions’ celebrated rehearsal director Joanne Fong is also a member of the Mark Bruce Company.

Set to a diverse mix of cult pop and baroque music including Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth and Domenico Scarlatti this performance is a dark journey into dreams, heightened reality and ancient and modern
mythology.

‘When the lights go up on Mark Bruce’s Sea of Bones to reveal a woad-spattered Joanne Fong in a bowler hat, the audience wriggle pleasurably, sensing that they’re in for a good time. When the seven-strong cast enter carrying severed heads, they know they are. How deep dare you go, Bruce asks us? There’s beauty there, but horror too. Reverberently unsettling. Catch it if you can.’ The Observer

This is a remarkable depiction of what happens when the boundaries between reality and dream worlds dissolve. Erotic, frenzied, beautiful and horrifying, this is a work to draw any audience into the powerful world it inhabits. Don’t miss it.

Tickets are available at for the Dance House through Chapter Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or book online at www.chapter.org.uk
