EXPLORING THE METALIFE OF DANCE

EXPLORING THE METALIFE OF DANCE Horizons Dance Festival is always a creative hot-pot of events for South Wales and the exciting artistic collaboration presented as part of the festival doesn’t stop at WNO and Diversions this year. The National Dance Company of Wales are also joining forces with other fellow WMC resident, Academi – the Welsh National Literature Promotion Agency and Society for Authors. Departure Terminal is a two-part week-long series of interactive events for writers, choreographers, composers and visual artists held at Diversions Dance House from the 11 – 15 May.

Writers keen on developing their ability in writing about dance and its many facets will be able to take part in ‘part one’ of the week: a Writers’ Seminar led by ex-dancer and distinguished Observer dance critic Luke Jennings and Welsh poet and critic Kathryn Gray.

Over two days journalists, professional and non-professional writers, poets and anyone with an interest in either dance or the written word are invited to explore ‘the Metalife of Dance’, joining in on workshops on critical and creative writing about contemporary dance, as well as discussion and debate about how dance is represented through different mediums. These workshops will be followed by creative sessions with Diversions’ dancers to work on new ideas using choreography and writing.

Roy Campbell-Moore, Director of Diversions Dance House said, “We are delighted to be working with Academi and hosting this wonderful event. The Horizons Dance Festival is about profiling dance and part of this is developing the way it is written about in Wales. This promises to be a fantastic week for dance critique and I advise anyone who is interested to come along and join in.”

Peter Finch, Academi Chief Executive, said: “This seminar is all about encouraging writers to think and work in new ways. It will be a catalyst for further creative collaborations and critical debate about dance and the art of writing about dance.”

‘Part two’ of the week is a series of daily workshops with invited choreographers, dancers, composers and visual artists. The seminar and workshop attendees are invited to stay and participate as new work is created each day, presented, discussed and reviewed. Audiences are invited to ‘drop in’ to the Dance House free of charge at 4pm each day, meet the artists and engage in discussion about the work and the nature of artistic collaboration.

Tickets for the Seminar and Writers workshops are available priced at £60 / £50 (conc) from Academi on 029 2047 2266 or email post@academi.org.
