‘COST THE EARTH’
by Sarah Argent
A tale of a young girl, her mother and her grandmother,
of a plot of land, and of the Earth on which they live.
Most scientists agree that mankind’s actions are damaging the planet: oil spills, discharging waste into air and rivers; carbon dioxide emissions which are leading to global climate change - glaciers melting, wildlife habitats being destroyed threatening some species with extinction, and weather patterns becoming more erratic leading to more droughts and more flooding. They argue that, by making relatively small changes to our lifestyles and habits, we could halt – or even reverse – this damage. So why are so few people making these changes? Why do so few people seem to care? Will we only sit up and listen and actually do something when it’s too late?
Cost the Earth tells a touching tale we will all recognise about family relationships: through three generations of one family and their feelings towards the environment - both local and global – this moving new play (shot through with humour) explores complex and sometimes confusing issues without ever distracting from the passionate heart of its story.
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”- ancient Native American proverb.
This is Gwent Theatre’s fourth transition project for pupils in years 6 and 7 and shares the common concern of both secondary and primary schools – sustainable development.
Public performances can be seen at:
The Melville Theatre, Abergavenny – June 15th 2007 - 7.30pm
Llanover Hall Arts Centre, Cardiff – June 22nd 2007 – 7.30pm
