GWENT THEATRE
Presents
‘COST THE EARTH’
by Sarah Argent
A tale of a young girl, her mother and her grandmother,
of a plot of land, and of the Earth on which they live.
Most scientists agree that mankind’s actions are damaging the planet: oil spills, discharging waste into air and rivers; carbon dioxide emissions which are leading to global climate change - glaciers melting, wildlife habitats being destroyed threatening some species with extinction, and weather patterns becoming more erratic leading to more droughts and more flooding. They argue that, by making relatively small changes to our lifestyles and habits, we could halt – or even reverse – this damage. So why are so few people making these changes? Why do so few people seem to care? Will we only sit up and listen and actually do something when it’s too late?
Cost the Earth tells a touching tale we will all recognise about family relationships: through three generations of one family and their feelings towards the environment - both local and global – this moving new play (shot through with humour) explores complex and sometimes confusing issues without ever distracting from the passionate heart of its story.
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”- ancient Native American proverb.
This is Gwent Theatre’s fourth transition project for pupils in years 6 and 7 and shares the common concern of both secondary and primary schools – sustainable development.
Public performances can be seen at:

HIJINX THEATRE presents
Ruling the Roost
On July 12th and 13th, Hijinx Theatre will end their whistle-stop national tour of Wales and England of their spring show Ruling the Roost at Llanover Hall Arts Centre, Canton, Cardiff.
Ruling the Roost is aimed at adults with learning disabilities, their families and communities. The themes of this wonderful heart-warming play are relationships, decision-making and attitudes to work, creating an exciting piece of theatre that is truly accessible to all.
Old Mama is full of excitement – a visit from Working Daughter and the Boy – her grandson – who ‘looks like a filmstar’. Working Daughter is shocked to see how Old Mama is slowing down, letting things slip, the daily chores are a struggle but she brings good news from the family and a present, a very special present that will change Old Mama’s life for ever. In a rustic Mediterranean setting, Ruling the Roost focuses on family and relationships, fusing storytelling with music and puppetry to explore the clash of generations as they struggle to do what’s best.
Can you ever know what’s best for someone else?
What does work mean to different generations?
Meanwhile……….. can anybody catch the goat before it eats everything?.
Hijinx Theatre is one of the UK's leading small scale touring companies, with over twenty five years experience of producing theatre for people with learning disabilities and their communities. We offer the thrill of live theatre; bringing to life characters, themes and issues which are relevant, challenging and inspiring
