Spectacle Theatre - Shanghai International Children Theatre Festival From the July 20th to August 6th 2007 Spectacle Theatre will perform at the Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival with the new version of ‘The Lazy Ant’ by Mark Ryan

Premiered in 2004, Shanghai International Children Theatre Festival is an annual festival for children and young people. Since its inception, the festival has achieved an important status not only in China, but has earned an international reputation. Each year, more than 10 different professional theatre companies from countries and regions including Canada, Belgium, Australia, Croatia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, UK, Japan, China Taiwan and China Hong Kong, tour to Shanghai to participate in the festival, attracting more than 100,000 families. The festival draws children closer to theatre and art, creating a healthier living environment.

Spectacle Theatre are the only company from the UK, and one of the first from Wales to be invited to participate in the festival. They will be performing a new version of their highly acclaimed production ‘The Lazy Ant’, which has been especially created for ages 5+.

The company will not only be giving performances at the festival, but also holding workshops and seminars, which reflect a strong wish by both parties that the project develops into a longer term collaboration.

The festival is supported by the Shanghai Municipal Government and is acclaimed among the public. Media coverage in China includes more than 30 major Chinese TV stations and newspapers.

‘The Lazy Ant’ will premiere at the company’s base at Coleg Morgannwg Rhondda on Wednesday 11th July 2007, before flying out to Shanghai.

On their return, Spectacle will be touring Paul Swift’s ‘Bad Mammy’ during the autumn, and will then go on to continue the tour of ‘The Lazy Ant’ during Spring and Summer 2008 to venues and schools throughout the UK.
