Spectacle Theatre – The Arts & Business Cymru Awards Winners

Spectacle Theatre – The Arts & Business Cymru Awards Winners The eight best business partners of the arts were named at the Arts & Business Cymru Awards Ceremony on Monday evening, at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

The Awards, sponsored by Grant Thornton and the Royal Mail, recognise the contribution made by business to the arts in Wales. Celebrities, including actors Keiron Self and William Thomas, renowned designer and television presenter David Emanuel, former Apprentice star Sophie Kain and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, presented the winners with works of art specially commissioned from West Wales based artist blacksmith Angharad Pearce Jones. Broadcasters Nicola Heywood-Thomas and Arfon Haines Davies hosted the ceremony.

In recognition of a partnership that has harnessed the power of the arts to engage young people,
Group 4 Securicor was the winner of Arts, Business & Young People, for the innovative way in which it partnered Spectacle Theatre to work with young offenders at Parc Prison in Bridgend.

“A fantastic project” was the judges response to the partnership. The Young Person’s Unit at Parc Prison in Bridgend wanted to find new ways of improving offenders’ behaviour and give young people the transferable skills needed to re-integrate into the community safely and securely. With investment from A&B, Spectacle ran weekly workshops to develop self confidence and self esteem, as well as to encourage team work and co-operation and an appreciation of drama.

The judges were struck by the synergy of the relationship. Spectacle is committed to equality of opportunity through inclusive and non judgmental content that reflects the lives of disadvantaged people who are not generally represented in or served by theatre. As a result of the project, the behaviour of over 100 young offenders has improved significantly and their motivation to get involved in other activities has increased. As well as continuing the work with 15-17 year old boys, the partnership will now be extended to other key areas of the prison.
