A musical dramatisation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is this year’s open air production by Gwent Young People’s Theatre at Abergavenny Castle at the end of July.

Adapted by Peter Hall, this spectacular show combines Orwell’s unique blend of comic satire and poignancy in a bleak and condemning tale of revolution down on the farm.

When the downtrodden beasts of Manor Farm oust the drunken farmer, all are awash with collectivist zeal.

Too soon, however, the pigs – who consider themselves superior in intelligence – succumb to the temptations of privilege and power.

Eventually the animals accept that ‘All animals are equal but some are more equal than others’.

Orwell's books have a number of timely messages, among them the ability of language to distort meaning and in Animal Farm the ruling elite breed a culture of fear in order to allow themselves unbridled freedom.

This adaptation - with lyrics by Adrian Mitchell and music by Richard Peaslee - translates the satire and insight of Orwell’s writing whilst adding a layer of spectacle that helps to keep the message fresh and relevant without threatening the savagery of the original material.

It brings a modern day classic to life for new generations and is a show for all ages with something of substance at every level.
You can see it at Abergavenny Castle on Thursday and Friday 26 and 27 July at 7pm and Saturday 28 July at 2.30pm (signed performance).

Tickets (£7 and £5 concessions) from the Borough Theatre Box Office 01873 850805.
