New Assembly cabinet announced....and Carwynh Jones is moved from Culture

First Minister Rhodri Morgan has unveiled his new Cabinet today (Thursday, 19 July) as part of a major reorganisation following the formal coalition between Labour and Plaid Cymru.
The appointment of Ieuan Wyn Jones as Deputy First Minister was confirmed a week ago but he will also take responsibility for Economy and Transport as part of the changes announced today.
Carwyn Jones will be Counsel General and Leader of the House. He will also have responsibility for Assembly Business and Communications.
Other new Ministers joining the Cabinet are Elin Jones who will be Minister for Rural Affairs which was formerly part of the Sustainability and Rural Development portfolio, while Rhodri Glyn Thomas is appointed Minister for the new Heritage portfolio which includes tourism, Cadw, arts, sports and the Welsh Language.
There are major changes across other portfolios with Andrew Davies becoming Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery, Jane Hutt taking responsibility for Education Children and Young People and Brian Gibbons taking responsibility for social justice and local government. Housing is added to Jane Davidson’s responsibility for Sustainability and Edwina Hart retains responsibility for Health and Social Services.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: “With this announcement of the cabinet today, we can now start to deliver on the policy areas set out in the ‘One Wales’ document. I am delighted that four Ministers from Plaid Cymru are joining the team alongside out colleagues in the Labour Party. This is indeed an historic occasion.” |
