![]() Two arts companies in Wales, Cut The Cr*p Theatre Company (CTCTC) and True/Fiction Theatre Company, have been selected to participate in the second year of this project which will see Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) provide rehearsal spaces and WMC staff for advice in the areas of technical production, marketing, media liaison and sponsorship. WMC Programming Manager Louise Miles-Crust says, “One of our ambitions is to be a literal furnace of inspiration - a place where new Welsh work can be developed and premiered. The Incubator Project will also give the two companies the opportunity of presenting their work in the Weston Studio to both a public and specialty invited audience of arts professionals and funding bodies.” Both performances will be shown on the same evening in a double-bill performance in the Weston Studio on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 October at 7pm. CTCTC presents The Prince of Wales, a comic play set in modern day Cardiff and explores identity, traditional values, Cardiff and what happens when our heroes desert us. All this is done with pace and humour and the use of modern technology in a play that will integrate the audience into the theatrical experience and knock down the ‘fourth’ wall. True/Fiction will present a piece of work based on The Exquisite Corpse. This innovative piece of work will create a writing project in which multiple Welsh writers contribute their part and pass the work on, each of them not knowing what has gone before, or will come after. The writers are Branwen Davies, Angharad Devonald, Tracy Harris, Kit Lambert and Othniel Smith. True/Fiction’s Associate Director Matthew Bulgo (who performed in year one of the Incubator Project in the Secret of Belonging by Antic Corporation) explains, “We will act dramaturgically, ensuring the workability of the combined segments, and workshop the text with actors, playing with the boundaries of this surreal form of playwriting.” Each company will have access to WMC rehearsal space, the Weston Studio for a period of intensive creative development and WMC staff for advice in the areas of technical production, marketing, media liaison and sponsorship if required. WMC will also work closely with the participating companies to give them an insight into the demands of other venues across the UK and provide them with useful consortium links in Wales, England and Scotland. Wales Millennium Centre’s second theatre, the Weston Studio, complements the larger-scale productions on the main stage, the Donald Gordon Theatre. The size and technical facilities of the Studio allows WMC to showcase more experimental and niche works, enabling WMC to work with both established innovative performance groups and new talent emerging both inside Wales and across the world. The Prince of Wales and The Exquisite Corpse will be shown at WMC’s Weston Studio from Friday 19 - Saturday 20 October at 7pm. The audience is invited to pay what they can, a suggested minimum of £3. It has been created with the specific aim of returning to the fundamentals of theatre with the use of current resources. This aim is focused on the dynamics of the audience who should experience theatre as an ‘event’. By exploring the unique relationship between the actor, audience and space CTCTC are determined to cut away the superficiality, pretentiousness and dilettantism of ‘gimmick theatre’ that can only alienate an audience. It is a company committed to storytelling that isn’t clouded with concepts but has clarity, meaning and relevance for those who experience it. Our company values support the belief that the audience has a right to have an opinion about the plays that they have witnessed. We intend to develop a relationship with the audience that reassures them that they are being listened to and that their thoughts and views matter to the process of putting on a play. This is paramount to achieving our aim in reaching new audiences and making the theatre a vibrant and evolving domain. Without the audience theatre ceases to exist. Therefore they play a vital role in the future of the arts. We advocate the development of theatre as a platform for empowering people from all social backgrounds. Christopher J Rees – Artistic director Christopher has over 22 years experience of directing young people and professionals as the Director of Llanelli Youth Theatre and Pukka Theatre Company.
