Summer Dance provides contemporary feast of fierce energy in movement and music at New Theatre

There is punk music; street fashion and contemporary dance on the scene on Saturday 11 August as Wales’ young dance talent take to the New Theatre stage in Future Dance Cardiff’s annual showcase, Revolution. The performance is the outcome of a week’s concentrated focus on dance development for young people run in partnership by Diversions Dance Explorer and A2: Arts Active.

Revolution, Summer Dance’s Saturday night performance is the result of a week-long intensive summer school run by Diversions’ professional dancers Cris Tandy and Wayne Parsons. Aimed at dance students aged 14-24 with previous experience, the course provides participants with the chance to build on contemporary technique skills and gain performance experience culminating in a professional production on stage at the New Theatre.

Diversions place its education work at the heart of its dance repertory as it builds and nurtures young dance talent in Wales. Summer Dance is just one example of the organisations wide ranging annual programme of education and participatory dance activities. The course’s popularity has grown significantly over the last few years and has this year attracted participants as far a field as the Netherlands, where dance is one of the country’s leading cultural activities and cultural exports.

Diversions’ Wayne Parsons and Cris Tandy will be choreographing Revolution - based on Diversions’ recently performed Peeled, by Itzik Galili. The work received critical acclaim both at home and abroad in the company’s Spring Tour and recent international tour to Poland and Athens. Alongside this will be original material choreographed by Cris and Wayne, upholding Diversions long standing philosophy on the development of the teachers as well as the students involved in the Summer School.

Cris Tandy, originally from Blaenpennal in West Wales, was introduced to dance by Diversions as a school child and has followed the dream through to dance professionally with the company after joining in 2004. Wayne Parsons, one of the company’s long standing members choreographed River, last year’s Summer Dance performance, as well as having been involved with other choreographic projects run by Dance Explorer.

With music by Cardiff based punk band, Naughty and costumes based on the popular culture ‘emo’ street fashion style, this will be a fiercely contemporary production that gives ownership to these young dancers on a professional scale in a professional environment.

Don’t miss them at the New Theatre; tickets are priced at £6 / £4 conc and are available from the New Theatre Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or book online @ www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk
