The Tempest Set To Whip Up A Storm In Llanelli
|
It’s Shakespeare - but not as you know it! The Tempest is given an exciting breath of fresh air by director Jack Shepherd when innovative theatre company Love&madness hit Llanelli’s Theatr Elli, 27 September, 1.30pm.
Widely regarded as one of Shakespeare’s greatest works, The Tempest is a tale of love, conspiracy and counter-conspiracy. Antonio, the usurping Duke Of Milan has forced the rightful Duke Of Milan and brother Prospero into exile on an island. Stranded with his daughter Miranda for 12 years, Prospero, also a powerful magician, divines that Antonio is on a ship passing close by the island. Hell-bent on revenge, and with the assistance of the spirit Ariel, he commands the winds to conjure up a tempest to wreck his siblings ship. But as the ship runs aground and the enemies are forced to take shelter on the island, there’s trouble ahead for Prospero as he uses his magic to control the survivors.
British actor, playwright and director Jack Shepherd is probably best known as Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in HTV’s Wycliffe. As a theatre director he has staged several productions at London’s Shakespeare’s Globe, so who beter to direct the stormy tale of The Tempest? “I always try to see the play for what it is, to strip away the cliches all the received ideas that have stuck to the play over the years like barnacles to the hull of a ship,” says Jack Shepherd on directing a Shakespeare play. “For the play to work the magic has to be believible. Prospero can control the winds, something great necromancers were supposed to be able to do. What power has a magician in our contemporary world? Ultimately the play is about forgiveness and forbearance.”
The Tempest is part of a two-day Love&Madness double bill, also featuring Frankenstein, performed on 28 September. The company, formed by Neil Sheppeck in 2000, are fast making a name for themselves on the live theatre circuit for their innovative interpretations of widely known classics. Tickets, priced £7.50 with £6 concessions, are available from the box office: 0845 226 3508/09/10 |
