Budding Writers and Directors Get Chance to Shine at The Sherman
|
Budding theatre writers and directors are being offered the chance to work on a pioneering new production developed to help showcase and develop emerging talent at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.
16 Northcott Avenue is a unique show in which five short plays by five up-and-coming playwrights are performed in an evening of new writing. Each play is directed by a different director and the scenes are acted by a company of talented performers. Producer Paul Whittaker from Hide Productions comments:
“As a writer myself, I know the importance of providing opportunities for emerging writers, directors and performers to showcase and develop their talents in a professional production mentored by industry professionals.”
Instigated by Hide Productions, the show is part of the Sherman’s new Young Artists Development Programme. Young Artist Development Director Phil Mackenzie says:
“The interesting thing about this project is that all the artists involved worked collaboratively on the project which has given them the opportunity to learn from and with each other. The Sherman is committed to new writing and emerging talent and this is going to be a fantastic first project for this scheme.”
Beth Webb is one of the writers with the production, and it is her first play to be performed since she took a scriptwriting course arranged by her employers Legal and General. She says:
“I am delighted to be offered the chance to be involved with this process. The Sherman and Hide are guiding us (the writers) through an enthralling and organic devising process, and I cannot wait to see the end product.”
16 Northcott Avenue is on at the Sherman Theatre on Wednesday 26 September – Thursday 27 September at 8pm. Tickets are £8 (Reductions £6) and are available from the Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
