Spectacle Theatre’s ‘The Lazy Ant’ gets Double Award at Chinese Festival |
![]() Spectacle Theatre are the only company from the UK, and one of the first from Wales invited to participate in the festival. They performed a new version of their highly acclaimed production ‘The Lazy Ant’, especially created for ages 5+. The dual centre festival saw the company performing not only in Shanghai, but also in Nanjing. ‘The Lazy Ant’ proved to be a massive success in both cities, with over 5,000 people seeing the production over 6 performances. The theatres were sold out for every performance, and people also queued in the hope of picking up returned tickets. Festival Director Gan Qingyuan, president of the Children's Art Theatre of the China Welfare Institute, says the festival this year paid more attention to new ideas, cultures and concepts. “The Shanghai International Children's Theatre Festival has grown steadily in the past three years and established a unique image and an international reputation," he says. "It has not only served as a platform for international cultural exchange but also a window to let the world know more about Shanghai and children's arts development in China.” Jiang Ziliang of the Shanghai Daily wrote - “From Spectacle Theatre of Wales, we followed the adventures of The Lazy Ant, where we met creatures which included bees, spiders, beetles, aphids and snails. The distinctive life of insects, adorable costumes and props, beautiful music and songs and interesting dances provided a delightful visual experience. A lively natural science class was delivered at the same time. The children attending the festival learned about other children, cultures, theatre, music and art – no words were needed”. ‘The Lazy Ant’ will be touring during Spring and Summer 2008 to venues and schools throughout the UK following the company’s autumn production - ‘Bad Mammy’ by Paul Swift.
