DANCING TO THE RIGHT SCRIPT… NEW WORK RE-WRITES CLASSICAL TO CONTEMPORARY IN SOUND SCRIPT

DANCING TO THE RIGHT SCRIPT… NEW WORK RE-WRITES CLASSICAL TO CONTEMPORARY IN SOUND SCRIPT Diversions, the Dance Company of Wales embark on another extensive tour this autumn, presenting a new triple bill, Sound Script, to audiences across Wales, Scotland and England. Over six weeks the company will tour to a variety of welsh venues including Theatr Gwynedd (4/5 October), The Riverfront (23 October) and Theatr Brycheiniog (25/26 October) as well as His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, and the Electric Theatre, Guildford, winding up with an exclusive programme of work at Holland Dance Festival, the pinnacle event of the international dance scene.

Wales’ National Dance Company are known for their commitment to bringing new and original work to Wales and the rest of the UK; and this autumn’s tour is no exception. The world-class company present a unique bill of contemporary dance work, the highlight of which is an exciting premiére work by young American choreographer Stephen Shropshire guaranteed to provide a modern twist on classical themes in tune with the rest of the company’s fiercely contemporary repertory.

Sound Script is a triple bill of international choreography performed by ten international dancers. Although strong in welsh identity, Diversions brings dance talent from across the world to perform under the Welsh banner throughout the UK and abroad. There is choreography from the Netherlands, America and the UK danced by professional dancers from Poland, Australia, Nova Scotia – the list goes on. The Company continues to prove the extent of its dancers’ skill and expertise in a programme that combines the effortlessly classical with the cutting edge.

Sugarwater is the premiére work by revered young choreographer Stephen Shropshire. Living and working in the Netherlands; the European axis point for contemporary dance, Shropshire’s work has been characterised as cinematic in its scope and as a trained musician as well as dancer, music features powerfully in the work too. This production will see the concept of ‘beats on Handel’ combined with lyrical physical movement providing a unique contemporary twist on classical traditions. Stephen says;
‘It is a great pleasure to work on this project with such an inspired group of artists- themselves on the verge of great and extraordinary things. Their fine technique and musicality, as well as their commitment and trust, have inspired and challenged me; helping to give the work a sensibility that is- I hope, as unique and diverse as the company itself.’

Peeled is a new work by renowned Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili that combines innovative lighting, a charged modern percussion score and exhilarating and ferocious movement that is true testament to the expertise of the company’s dancers. The work was toured throughout the UK during the company’s spring tour as well as being toured to international dance festivals in Athens and Poland this summer where it was met with astounding critical acclaim.

Ronsaria is the revival piece of the programme, first showcased by Dance Umbrella and performed by Diversions throughout 1984. Choreographed by Tony Thatcher, this is a cheerful and zany piece, where dance and music lead independent lives, as a score by Donizetti is interspersed by live and therefore unpredictable radio mixes. This is the crazy and comedy element in the programme, and one not to be missed.

Diversions are a unique dance company putting their education and participation work equally alongside their performance. As part of the organisation’s Dance Explorer programme; throughout the tour Diversions’ professional dancers will take their skills further than the stage and out to the public in the form of fun, interactive workshops to inspire local dance talent.

Diversions have had a busy year and so far show no signs of slowing their impressive momentum down. A hugely successful collaboration with fellow national company and WMC resident Welsh National Opera on The Seven Deadly Sins was followed by a summer consisting of an acclaimed European tour of Poland and Athens Dance Festivals.

This international presence will continue following the tour with an invite to perform at the prestigious Holland Dance Festival. Following the Autumn Tour Diversions will take Sugarwater and Practice Paradise to the prestigious Holland Dance Festival. Holland is the central point in European Contemporary dance and Diversions will join dance companies from all over the world taking their turn on this revered stage.
