![]() Llanover Hall Arts Centre, Cardiff, Friday 16 November also 7.30pm The Home Office is funding a Gwent Theatre project which is touring schools throughout South East Wales with an eye-opening drama that tackles the pervasive nature of violence in the home. Gwent Theatre in Education has a strong reputation for dealing with serious social issues with uncompromising sensitivity. The drama, Lizard’s Tale by Cardiff playwright Louise Osborn, is no exception. Poignant and powerful, it explores the painful consequences of two teenage boys and their mother who live with an abusive man. The company was commissioned to take the play to older secondary school students by the Pan Gwent Safer Relationships Programme made up of representatives from all five local authorities - Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen. The project is part a programme of work already undertaken in schools by police liaison officers and sexual health co-ordinators and is supported by Women’s Aid, youth services and other agencies. The necessity for tackling the subject of domestic abuse with young people is revealed in a survey that showed one in six boys think it acceptable to hit a girl if he thinks she’s in the wrong. Alarmingly one in four girls agree with this opinion. The Safer Relationships programme provides measures to raise awareness of what is acceptable and unacceptable in a relationship in order to reduce the number of young people who become victims or perpetrators in their own relationships. Lizard’s Tale raises questions about the impact of physical and emotional abuse on both individuals, their families and friends. It also addresses universal problems of bullying, relationships and the effects of separation and loss on young people. This new production is directed by Jain Boon and will tour throughout October and November. It has a cast of four – Gareth Aldon, Aled Herbert, Lizzie Rogan and Jessica Sandry. It is accompanied by haunting music created by young composer Lucy Rivers - herself an ex-member of Gwent Young People’s Theatre which is run by Gwent Theatre. A public performance of Lizard’s Tale is at the Melville Theatre, Drama Centre, Penypound, Abergavenny, Friday 26 October, 7.30pm. Tickets (£6 and £4) are from the Borough Theatre box office in Abergavenny, tel 01873 850805. |
