As hemlines rose, so did aspirations . . . .Hobson's Choice at RWCMD RWCMD opens its Autumn drama season with one of the great English comedy’s of the 20th century. First seen in London in 1916 and frequently revived ever since, most notably two weeks ago at the New Theatre, Cardiff, RWCMD presents Hobson’s Choice with an updated spin.

Director Joyce Branagh says:-

“When the designer and I were first talking about the play, we were going to set it in1880 – as Brighouse intended. Then we wondered if we were missing an opportunity to have fun with this classic comedy and give the play a new lease of life. So we got to thinking – what period would give the play the most suitable backdrop? And we both, independently, came up with the 1960’s.

For me the 60’s represent an era of fun, mini-skirts, great music and colour. It was a time where your background – your ‘class’ - still seemed to matter greatly, but there were people, especially young people, bucking the system and climbing up the social ladder. Four working-class northern lads were ruling the charts in Britain and America and the girls who screamed at them were starting to become aware of feminism and equality. As hemlines rose, so did aspirations, and like the fortunes of Maggie Hobson and Willie Mossop, anything and everything seemed possible...

Well, by gum!”
There is no slow build to the comedy elements in this production which tests the actors’ ability to set their characters from the start – a challenge our students are thriving on.

Join the students in their first performance of their final year of study and enjoy this fast-paced, forthright, funny and surprisingly tender classic tale.
