Eddie Ladd’s Cof y corff / muscle memory
|
Eddie Ladd, one of Wales’ most celebrated performers, premieres Cof y corff / muscle memory, in Wales. The piece, which was commissioned by ROH2 at the Royal Opera House, London will come to the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff and Theatr Felinfach, Ceredigion this autumn. A second leg of the tour will visit Aberystwyth, Caernarfon and Swansea next spring.
Much of Eddie Ladd’s work deals with themes of colonialism and the survival of small nations. This new work is no exception. It’s an essay on foot that has the performer trying to reconnect with Welsh history through dance and movement analysis. Each period has its own kind of shape and choreography: in 1256 there’s a fair amount of shaping in planes, the Act of Union in 1536 brings flow adaptation with low intensity and Owain Glynd_r has a lot of vision drive!
Featuring an original soundtrack, and an essay text delivered live, Cof y corff/muscle memory moves through time from 1256 through to the present day and, inescapably, much of it is to do with the Britishing of Wales. It is an attempt by the performer to understand and embrace a culture that its people have been compelled to forget.
The show is performed live to camera, sometimes two or three, edited live and processed on site. Audience members choose how they wish to watch the work, shifting between the ‘unfinished’ dance on-stage and its final setting in a digital environment on screens around the auditorium.
Cof y corff / muscle memory was voted “Best Contemporary Premiere” by Donald Hutera in the Dance Europe Critics' Survey.
NB. The show will be performed in Welsh on November 9th and in English on the 10th.
Cof y corff / muscle memory was originally commissioned by ROH2 at the Royal Opera House, produced by mes:a International Performance Collective with support from Diversions and assistance from Chapter. The Wales tour is supported by funding from Arts Council of Wales.
