WARREN MITCHELL MAKES RARE STAGE APPEARANCE

Acclaimed actor Warren Mitchell is to make a rare stage appearance in the brand new UK production of Jeff Baron’s multi-award winning play Visiting Mr. Green. The play visits the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 4 to Saturday 8 December.

Warren has played the part of Mr. Green before, both here and in Australia and it has long been a desire to recreate what he considers the best role he has had the pleasure of performing. Jewish widower Mr. Green is almost hit by a speeding car driven by corporate executive Ross Gardiner. Found guilty of reckless driving, Ross is ordered to spend the next six months making weekly visits to Mr. Green. What starts off as a beautifully crafted comedy about two people who resent being in the same room together develops into a gripping and poignant drama.

Eighty-two-year-old Mitchell was last seen on stage in Arthur Miller’s The Price, for which he won a prestigious Olivier Award. Best known as Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part, Warren started his stage career a staggering 74 years ago, although he was learning even before that as he explains: “Aged four, I told a dirty joke to my family - my father laughed, clipped me round the ear and sent me to bed. I learned then that showbiz is quite tricky and audiences fickle. Aged seven, I was singing and shuffling off to Buffalo at Gladys Gordon’s Academy in Hoe Street, Walthamstow. Aged eight, I retired from the stage - it all seemed a bit sissy and I preferred to play football on Saturday mornings and watch my beloved Spurs in the afternoon, a habit I’ve never been able to break!”

Luckily, Warren had a change of heart when, in 1944, he met Richard Burton and they both joined the RAF together. “His account of the profession convinced me that the theatre might be more in my line than nuclear physics back at Oxford - and so it turned out!” he continued.

Visiting Mr. Green also stars upcoming actor David Sturzaker whose recent theatre credits Henry in Henry V and Stanhope in Journey’s End.
Jeff Baron’s multi-award winning play has had over 300 productions in 37 countries and been translated in to 22 languages. This brand new UK production is directed by former Chichester Theatre director Patrick Garland, whose recent theatre credits include Full Circle with Joan Collins and Simon Callow in The Mystery of Charles Dickens.
