This Spring signals a new beginning for Sherman Cymru, formed from the merger of new writing company Sgript Cymru and the Sherman Theatre Company. Launching the new year with a new look and new website, Sherman will play host to internationally acclaimed performers and artists in a top Spring line-up.
Spring sees the first English language new writing production for Sherman Cymru, The Almond and the Seahorse by Kaite O’Reilly. This new play follows the lives of two couples, both affected by memory loss. This fascinating look at the fragility of memory and the power of devotion, will open at Sherman on 29 February – 15 March before commencing on a tour.
The top drama continues with the Royal Shakespeare Company bringing their latest production, Noughts and Crosses, to Sherman in March. Adapted from best-selling and award-winning author Malorie Blackman’s novel, and inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Noughts and Crosses dramatises this thrilling love story of two young people kept apart by prejudice and injustice. Noughts and Crosses will be on at Sherman on 18 -22 March.
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru return to Sherman’s stage with a new Welsh translation of one of the greatest play’s of the twentieth century, The Crucible by Arthur Miller. With a cast of 17, Y Pair will be one of the largest ever Welsh productions for the stage. Y Pair will be at Sherman on 13 – 14 March.
Theatr Iolo also present a new hard-hitting translation of original prize-winning French-Canadian play, Leon le Nul. Lenny is a touching story about the fantasy life we make for ourselves when we are small ones in a big bad world and is on for one night only on 9 February.
Dance will also play a big part in this season’s programme kicking off with a work in progress from one of the UK’s most innovative dance companies, Kompany Malakhi. The company will visit the Sherman to team up with a group of young people to work on Belong Division on 25 January. Whilst working on the project, they will showcase Boxin, a work in progress on 23 January.
The Michael Clark Company present Mmm… Stravinsky Project Part 2 on 3 – 4 April. Michael Clark is one of the most significant dancers and choreographers to have emerged in the last 20 years. Mmm… sees Clark explore themes of birth, life and death in a relentless and sexually charged choreography.
The internationally acclaimed DV8 Physical Theatre will present To Be Straight With You on 24 – 25 April. Based on hundreds of hours of audio interviews from people directly affected by issues of tolerance, religion and sexuality, To Be Straight With You combines dance, text, documentary, animation and film.
NoFit State Circus are also back by popular demand, after the last two sell out shows, with Splott on the Landscape 3. Bringing together the best of NoFit State artists along with community performers, NoFit State will be an evening of comic capers and stunning skills on 25 – 26 January.
Following sell out runs at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival, Sherman continues to bring you the best of British comedy this Spring with Josie Long on 4 February, and Lucy Porter on 29 April. Alun Cochrane, another Edinburgh favourite and one of the most celebrated storytelling comedians currently working in the UK also visits on 8 February with his new show. If.comedy award winner, Phil Nichol brings his brand new comedy show, Hiro Worship, on 20 February and Sherman is thrilled to welcome back John Hegley to its stage on 8 March with his brand new show Letters to an Earwig.
2008 sees a new focus on emerging artists and new work and Sherman Cymru will also present a new writing festival in April. SpringBoard will develop a range of short pieces in a variety of styles. More details will follow in the next few months.
As well as monthly ScriptSlam events continuing, Sherman Young Artists Development scheme and new Cardiff-based production company Give It a Name produce a new production of Dic Edwards’ blistering script Utah Blue on 30 April – 3 May.
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama also return with the thrilling and breathtaking musical, West Side Story on 8 – 16 February. The students will also perform Anton Chekov’s Three Sisters on 27 – 30 March.
Theatre for children will also continue at Sherman this season. Theatr Iolo will present an enchanting, intimate performance with live music in Under the Carpet for the Under 5s on 8 March. Also for younger children, Travelling Light Theatre Company present Shadow Play on 12 April and then Theatr na n’Og present Me, A Giant for ages 5 – 7 on 19 April.
Sherman Cymru adds music to its programme this season, with a new groundbreaking project by composer and theatre maker Simon Thorne, who creates extraordinary worlds in sounds. The Howl in Arcadia premieres at Sherman on 19 – 20 March.
