Swash-buckling adventure awaits intrepid theatre-goers this February as Robert Louis Stephenson’s pirate classic, Treasure Island, comes to the New Theatre in a brand new stage adaptation. From Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 February The Birmingham Stage Company present an action-packed yet faithful version of Stephenson’s tale of buccaneers and buried gold.Treasure Island follows young Jim Hawkins who discovers a treasure map in The Admiral Benbow Inn. He hands it over to Squire Trelawney who, seized with excitement, sets sails with Jim in search of the mysterious island. They are joined on the ship by a hand-picked crew and the ship’s cook, Long John Silver. But the one-legged Silver has a shocking secret in store and as they reach their destination, Jim faces the most exciting and dangerous adventure of his life! Treasure Island has been a family favourite for over 120 years and is now brought fresh to the stage by The Birmingham Stage Company, the team behind the sell out success of Horrible Histories. Neal Foster, BSC’s Manager, states that this production of Treasure Island is returning to the roots of Stephenson’s original novel “which has got lost in recent stage productions. The BSC is doing what it does best and going back to the original story to reintroduce this fantastic tale to the theatre in all its dramatic glory.” Stephenson’s novel is certainly in safe hands. This pre West End production has an ingenious set by Jackie Trousdale that subtly morphs from The Admiral Benbow Inn, to the ship ‘Hispaniola’, and even the desert island! A superb cast includes Gavin Robertson as Long John Silver, who recently starred alongside Christian Slater in the West End revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Plus, the script is penned by Stuart Paterson, who previously adapted Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom that played at the New last year and went on to win The Barclay’s Best Children’s Play of the Year Award.
