A Midsummer Night’s Dream at New Theatre, Cardiff

A Midsummer Night’s Dream at New Theatre, Cardiff One of Shakespeare’s most dazzling comedies is brought magically to life when Clwyd Theatr Cymru present A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the New Theatre from Tuesday 4 to Saturday 8 March. Blending desire, enchantment and madness, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a journey into the spell binding world of love; its passion, imagination and power to transform lives.

A story of magical forces at work in a haunted forest, the play explores the tension between the dreams and illusions of lovers and the cruel realities of a lesser world. Rather than obey her father and marry Demetrius, Hermia elopes into the forest with her lover Lysander. Demetrius gives chase, only to be closely followed by Helena, intent on his seduction.

In the forest the artisans - rude mechanicals led by Nick Bottom, are rehearsing a play to perform at the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens and Hippolyta. When Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies quarrel, supernatural forces are unleashed in the haunted forest upon both lovers and actors.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is performed by a company of seventeen including Siwan Morris as both Hippolyta and Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Siwan is a familiar face on TV, best known for her role as Angie in E4 drama Skins. Nick Bottom, who is transformed by Puck into an ass, is played by Phylip Harries. A well-known face on the Welsh stage and screen, Phylip is best known for his role as Diago Maradona in S4Cs Sgorio. They are joined by Julian Lewis Jones (Where the Heart Is) and Bradley Freegard (West End hit All About My Mother).

Directed by Tim Baker, whose award-winning work includes To Kill a Mockingbird and Oh What a Lovely War, A Midsummer Night’s Dream also features original live music composed for this production by Dyfan Jones and performed by seven of the company.
