CandoCo return to The Riverfront

CandoCo return to The Riverfront CandoCo continue their highly successful tour of two very contrasting works: The Stepfather by Arthur Pita and And who shall go to the ball? by Rafael Bonachela at The Riverfront on Tuesday 26 February at 7.30pm.

Performers are Marc Brew, Zoe Brown, Bettina Carpi, Nadia Adame, Natalie Ayton, Jorge M Crecis, Frederick Opoku-Addaie. Arthur uses the music of The Violent Femmes to illustrate his dark and humorous story of a backwoods family and Rafael’s piece is set to an original score by the iconic artist and composer Scott Walker.

Arthur Pita works extensively in opera, theatre and dance. Recent credits include Carmen at the Royal Opera House, La Boheme and Showboat at the Royal Albert Hall and the award winning Snow White in Black for Phoenix Dance Theatre. In 2004 Arthur launched his own company, Arthur Pita Open Heart, with a two week season of ‘Camp’ at the Place before touring through 2004/5. From his first forays into choreography Pita has revealed himself as an inventive creator, melding dance and theatre into what he styles “dansical”; Pita subverts the fairy story, the morality tale, to his own blackest intentions shifting and manipulating perspectives of good and evil.

Rafael Bonachela’s choreographic credits include Rambert Dance Company, Kylie Minogue, Probe, Bonachela Dance Company, George Piper Dances and many others. Committed to innovation in movement, Rafael travels seamlessly between the mainstream and the avant garde dance worlds. He has, to date, choreographed nine works for Rambert dancers including 21, a multi-media work produced in collaboration with Kylie’s creative team; four dance films; the duet ‘Soledad’ for Probe which won two awards at the first Biennale Danza in Italy in 2006 and ‘Amox’, a dynamic duet for the recent Ballet Boyz gala at the Royal Festival Hall. Rafael formed his own company, Bonachela Dance Company, in 2006 and debuted with the highly innovative programme, ‘Voices’, at the Southbank Centre before going on tour.

Founded in 1991 by Celeste Dandeker and Adam Benjamin, CandoCo quickly developed from running workshops at the Mike Heaffey Centre in London to a professional dance company specialising in the integration of disabled and non-disabled dancers. By 1996 CandoCo were performing more than 30 shows annually in the UK; by ’98 performances were taking them all over the world – to Europe, Australia, North and South America, Asia and Africa.

Artistic Director Celeste Dandeker OBE, (who recently handed over to Pedro Machado and Stine Nilsen who became Artistic Directors of CandoCo) has, over the years, commissioned works for the company from internationally renowed choreographers such as Javier de Frutos, Doug Elkins, Siobhan Davies, Darshan Singh Bhuller, Stephen Petronio, Rafael Bonachela and Arthur Pita. The company has won numerous awards and is responsible for a groundbreaking approach to teaching dance in an integrated setting. In September 2004 the CandoCo Foundation Course in Dance was launched for disabled students. Thousands of people participate in CandoCo’s education programmes around the world; their achievements in performance and education are legendary and inspiring.
