Dirty Protest heads back to school
|
Following the success of Dirty Protest it's time to team up with Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
The Big Issue called previous sold-out Dirty Protests “spellbinding” and The Guardian said it was a “cracking line-up of new short plays”.
After writing a play for the Christmas Dirty Protest, which also featured first year RWCMD student Catrin Stewart, Tom Cullen was keen to create a spin-off night.
He said, "Dirty Protest inspired me. It was so exciting, so fresh, so young and I want to transfer that to the Welsh College.
“I look around the Welsh College and want to utilise the abundance of talent which resides there. We have actors, musos, techies and designers; none of who work together until third year, if at all.
“I want people to realise that there's more out there than sitting around waiting for your agent to call.”
The spin-off will revive Ed Thomas, Kit Lambert and Alan Harris’ original
plays from the first Dirty Protest. Lambert’s play is now to be turned into a short film.
The night will also see the premiere of three new plays from College students,
Amelia Stubberfield, Angela Smith and Ceri Murphy
With the full backing of the Dirty Protest co-operative (Catrin Rees, Claire Hill and Tim Price) the plays will be performed in the bar from 8pm on Friday March 14.
Tim Price said, "Dirty Protest want to support and facilitate any new writing night in Cardiff and that’s why we’re helping the students at Welsh college with this night.
"DP has strong ties to the college, having used exceptional students as performers and writers at our previous nights. Dirty Protest and the students felt there was an unnecessary gap between the theatre industry and the college, so the night is going someway to close that."
All pieces will be performed by acting students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Open to the public the night will also feature live music from James Stephenson and Ceri Simms.
The original Dirty Protest will be appearing for one night only in the Sherman in April and heading to Latitude Festival in July.
