The latest theatre, dance and performance news

A summer filled with circus, soul and Shakespeare and much more…

A summer filled with circus, soul and Shakespeare and much more… The Riverfront is gearing up for it’s most exciting summer season ever and it all begins this week with the incredible NoFit State Circus at Tredegar Park with the preview of their new performance tabú – standing on the edge of the wilderness. This will be an explosion of furious fun and choreographed mayhem in the giant spaceship big top!

Dance performances this season include Welsh Independent Dance with their Dance Bytes on Tour 2008, then its time for Cardiff based Earthfall before falling in love (again) with the classical love story Romeo & Juliet performed by Independent Ballet Wales.

On the drama stage, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) promises to play all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in just 97 minutes whilst Funeral Games is a dark, comic piece of physical theatre about a funeral business. Theatr Ffynnon will present their newest drama, the uncomfortably honest A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, and the family shows Shadow Play and Wedding Story will entertain the whole family, as will the Mayor’s Gala. Full Circle, presented by Hijinx, is inspired by the true story about Andy Williams, a man with Down’s Syndrome with an (almost) impossible dream. Volcano Theatre Company tells, through the drama Unknown Pleasures, the story about Swansea’s Palace Theatre from rise to fall and UWN’s Vista Theatre return with their final year graduating show.

There is an eclectic comedy mix this summer season with Brendon Burns proving to us why he was awarded the If.comedy award, before witty comedienne Jo Brand will make her entry in the Main Theatre (sorry - already sold out!). Richard Digance and Gervase Phinn bring us some older school laughter and the regular Comedy Shed is held the last Friday of every month, so you have no reason for missing out on getting your laughter muscles going!

The Riverfront cinema is showing a range of 2008 Oscar and Bafta winning films including
No Country For Old Men, The Kite Runner, There Will Be Blood, The Diving-Bell and The Butterfly, The Other Boleyn Girl, My Kid Could Paint That and Juno. Remember, if you book any four films in one go, you’ll only pay £11.40 (which will save you £6.60)!

Music-wise, Nick Drake’s songs will come to life again performed by Keith James and Rick Foot before Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers set the pace with their drums. It’s expected that
Dr Feelgood will make you feel…good, Masters of the Musical will give you the best from the West End and Broadway before Elvis on Tour – the Legend Continues pays tribute to the King! Absolute Swing does exactly what is says whilst paying tribute to all of the great swing legends and another exciting musical performance will be from soul singer Ola Onabule, who visits The Riverfront for the first time. Classical music lovers will welcome a return visit from Sinfonia Cymru and The Lower Machen Festival present Serendipity, who have injected new blood into the Welsh choral tradition.

In addition to all of the performances mentioned, it’s worth mentioning the regular
First Wednesday lunch time classical concerts and Second Wednesday talks, as well as workshops with new dance classes such as Ballroom and Latin American dance. In the Art Gallery there are local exhibitions to view, so there’s plenty going on at The Riverfront…
