New Company Present Story of Notorious American Criminal at Sherman

New Company Present Story of Notorious American Criminal at Sherman A new Cardiff based theatre company present a true story about notorious American criminal Gary Gilmore at Sherman, Cardiff this April.

Utah Blue, a co-production by Sherman Cymru’s Young Artists Development Programme and new company Give It a Name, is about murderer Gary Gilmore’s fight for his death sentence to be fulfilled.

In 1976 the death penalty was reinstated in America but no one had dared use it for ten years – until Gary Gilmore that is. Convicted for two murders, Gilmore believed execution to be retribution against the state, and refused all opportunities for the appeals he was legally entitled to.

Gary became a bizarre celebrity. Bidding wars for his story began. The state even rescued him from a suicide attempt in order to execute him “legitimately”. Since that day, 1099 people have been legally executed in the USA.

Written by Dic Edwards, Utah Blue is based on Norman Mailer’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel The Executioner’s Song (1979), in which he utilized letters and transcripts of interviews of Gary himself.

Along with the support of Sherman and Young Artists Development Director Phillip Mackenzie, Utah Blue has also been made possible thanks to a small project grant from the Arts Council Wales. Phillip Mackenzie comments:

“The idea behind the Young Artists Development programme is to provide emerging artists – whether they are actors, directors, writers – with opportunities to continue to develop and practice their artform within a professional environment. Give it a Name are a group of young actors who wanted to produce Utah Blue, due to it being a thrilling and compelling but rarely performed piece of contemporary theatre. It’s their first production as a new company and this gives them an exciting opportunity”

Utah Blue is on at Sherman on 30 May – 3 May at 8pm. Tickets are £8 (Reductions £6) and can be booked from Sherman Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk. Please note that Utah Blue contains strong language and is suitable for ages 16 +.
