![]() This year The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff boasts some of the biggest names in classical music with Bryn Terfel and Grammy Nominated Rebecca Evans taking to the stage in the Choral Prom (19 July). Other soloists include violinist Tasmin Little who will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (17 July) and pianists Angela Hewitt in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 (18 July) and Freddy Kempf in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 (25 July). Maya Kock takes centre stage with her violin in the Lloyds TSB Last Night of the Welsh Proms which includes a programme of Strauss, Vaughan Williams and Elgar and, of course, that patriotic party atmosphere that the last night of The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff always brings. Under the artistic direction of Owain Arwel Hughes OBE, the 2008 season features no less than eight orchestral concerts and three concerts especially for younger audiences (Primary Prom on 3 July, Children’s Prom 12 July and the Tiddly Prom 18-20 July). This year sees the return of the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera in the Choral Prom (19 July) as well as performances by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (Tchaikovsky Prom on 17 July), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Beethoven Prom on 20 July), BBC National Orchestra of Wales (Romantic Favourites Prom on 18 July and the Pictures and Portraits Prom 23 July). A new edition to the The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff this year is the Gamelan Prom which brings the compelling sounds and stories of Java to the St David’s Hall stage. To round of this two week musical festival will be three amazing consecutive concerts from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Russian Ballet Prom on 24 July, Grand Classic Prom on 25 July and the inspiring Last Night of the Welsh Proms Cardiff on 26 July). The Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms Cardiff will feature three conductors this year, including the season’s Artistic Director Owain Arwel Hughes OBE conducting six of the evening orchestral concerts, as well as Thierry Fischer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (23 July) and a return for Michael Bell with the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra in the ever-popular Children’s Prom (12 July). The Children’s Prom, with special guest narrator Sarah-Jane Honeywell, is one of three concerts especially for younger music lovers. The others being the Primary Prom for 5-9 year-olds with a special event Mozart (3 July) and the ever-popular Tiddly Prom returning by popular demand for 6 performances on 18 - 20 July. In addition to the orchestral performances, the 2008 season brings the first ever Gamelan Prom (12 July) followed by the Folk Prom (22 July) starring England’s finest roots duo Show of Hands. St David’s Hall’s mammoth pipe organ, one of the largest in Wales, gets a special outing in the Organ Prom (21 July) at a special lunchtime performance from Thomas Trotter, one of the UK’s best-loved organists.
