Sherman Summer Season 2008

Sherman Summer Season 2008 Sherman continue their fantastic year with an outstanding programme of theatre including a new play from the National Theatre of Scotland, the award winning An Oak Tree and a controversial new Welsh language play from Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru as well as two new Sherman Cymru productions.

This Summer will see Sherman preview Deep Cut before its Autumn run. Taken from original source material and first hand testimonies, Deep Cut, written by Philip Ralph, focuses on the family of 18 year old Cheryl James who died from gunshot wounds at the Deepcut Barracks in 1995. This bold and compelling new play will preview at Sherman on 24 -26 July before its full run on 16 – 27 September.

Sherman Cymru and new company, Torri Gair, will also be producing Yr Argae as part of the 2008 National Eisteddfod, taking place in Cardiff this year. A Welsh translation of Conor McPherson’s The Weir by the late Wil Sam, Yr Argae is a dark and ghostly tale set in a small pub in rural Ireland. Yr Argae will be at Sherman on 4 – 9 August.

The Summer season also includes a fantastic visiting production line-up including a co-production from renowned theatre company Vanishing Point and the National Theatre of Scotland. Little Otik combines dark humour and surreal horror in an unnerving but tender family story and is at Sherman on 18 – 21 June. Also visiting us from Scotland are TAG Theatre Company with Yellow Moon on 12 June. Written by David Greig, Yellow Moon is a modern Bonnie and Clyde tale that follows the fortunes of two teenagers on the run.

The high quality drama continues with the award winning An Oak Tree by Tim Crouch. Set in a hypnotist’s act, An Oak Tree is performed by two actors – one of whom has never seen or read a word of the play they’re in until they’re in it. An Oak Tree is on at Sherman on 4 – 5 June. Sherman also welcome back the hilarious Mappa Mundi who give Oscar Wilde’s most popular comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest their own unique twist on 14 – 15 May.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru return to Sherman with Siwan, one of the best-known Welsh language plays, written by Saunders Lewis. A new production of love, passion and forgiveness, Siwan will be at Sherman on 20 – 23 May.

As part of the 2008 Eisteddfod, Theatr Genedlaethol will also return in August with a highly controversial new Welsh play by Aled Jones Williams. Set in the present, Iesu! takes a fresh look at a powerful historical character – Jesus. Iesu! is at Sherman on 5 - 8 August. Sherman Cymru’s Yr Argae will also play alongside Iesu! as part of the Eisteddfod line-up.

Sherman Cymru continue to build on developing and supporting emerging writers, actors and directors. The Young Artists Development scheme presents a co-production with new Cardiff theatre company Give It a Name with Utah Blue on 30 April – 3 May. Sherman Cymru’s Young Artists Development also collaborates with Cardiff based Ad Hoc Theatre Company for two one act plays – Match Play and Mark of the Man – on at Sherman on 25 -26 June.

Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre also present a groundbreaking new production, Kontakt. Inspired by the work of German Conceptualist, Hannah Herzig, Kontakt is a series of one-to-one performances with thirty young people and is at Sherman on 5 - 7 June.

The students of the Royal Welsh College of Drama present a new dark and no-holds-barred production of Macbeth on 23 – 31 May. They also return with their opera performance, L’Etoile, an opera comique by Emmanuel Chabrier, on at Sherman on 2 – 5 July.

Comedy continues at Sherman this season with Daniel Kitson bringing his new show The Impotent Fury of the Privileged on 12 May. Known for his gentle and intelligent humour, the show is a frustrated and beautiful stand-up show about wanting the world to change but not doing enough to change it.

Sherman continues with a season of shows for young people including Scamp Theatre and Bristol Old Vic with Aesop’s Fables on 6 May, Indefinite Articles with Claytime on 10 May, The Puppet State Theatre with The Man Who Planted Trees on 17 May, and Theatre Centre with How High Is Up? on 21 June.
