Northern Ballet Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the New Theatre, Cardiff

Northern Ballet Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the New Theatre, Cardiff Northern Ballet Theatre’s Olivier nominated dance version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream comes to the New Theatre from Tuesday 27 May. Mischievous, witty, colourful and hugely entertaining, the familiar story of Athenian lovers and warring fairies has been transformed to a touring ballet company in the 1940s. Dazzling sets see the ballet studio transformed into a moving train, transporting the company through a giant eye to a world of fairies and floating beds.

The most bewitching of Shakespeare’s plays is brought vividly to life with David Nixon’s stylish choreography. The quarrelling lovers are re-cast as Dancers, whilst Theseus and Hippolyta assume the roles of Artistic Director and Principal Ballerina. Emotions run high and squabbling breaks out as artistic temperaments clash with romantic entanglements. All are relieved when the time comes to board the sleeper train from London to Edinburgh but the tensions continue on board and as the company settle down for the night, the train enters a tunnel and the dreams begin.

The Dior inspired costumes, along with the stylish black and white sets provide a dazzling contrast to the glorious technicolour of the dream world.

Nixon says, “My version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that young people get themselves entangled in. NBT is a company with many young dancers who are going to flourish in this production, so I think it is appropriate to bring it back to the repertoire now. The company is technically stronger than when we first created it, so I am looking forward to seeing how it naturally adapts to become a more challenging dance piece.”

Innovative choreography brings out the comedy and romance of this enchanting story. Music from Mendelssohn and Brahms, played live by the NBT Orchestra, completes this unique dance adaptation of Shakespeare’s fantastically funny play.
