For the first time in Wales, Lunar Productions come to Sherman and present a unique chance to delve into the techniques of Topeng masked drama with an intense 3 day workshop led by Topeng masters, followed by a performance.Lunar productions is an arts organization concentrating on international cultural exchanges and Bali Unmasked is a part of series of projects that promote intercultural communication of art practicing and exchange of knowledge. The course is suitable for actors, dancers, storytellers, circus performers and students of performance with an interest in mask work and cross-cultural art forms. Participants will be immersed in a practical hands-on exploration of Topeng as well as contextual learning sessions with British based practitioners Margaret Coldiron and Tiffany Strawson. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of Topeng’s role in traditional and contemporary Balinese culture as well as its influence on current performance practice. The workshops will be followed by an intimate evening of cultural storytelling, music and performance presented in collaboration with Cardiff Storytelling Circle. Extracts of traditional Balinese Topeng (mask drama) performed by one of Bali's most outstanding mask makers, teacher and performer Ida Bagus Alit and company, followed by offerings of Welsh tales shared by some of Wales' best loved storytellers. Bali Unmasked will also perform and run workshops at the Dartington College of Arts on 16 - 18 May.
