Music, Theatre and Arts to accommodate all tastes this Summer

Music, Theatre and Arts to accommodate all tastes this Summer Port Talbot’s major cultural event, the Margam Festival, kindly sponsored by General Electric, returns for the seventh consecutive year this July with an exciting programme of music, theatre and arts to accommodate all tastes.

This year the festival will be spread throughout the month beginning with the Port Talbot and District Amateur Operatic Society performing songs from your favourite musicals on Tuesday, 1 July, concluding with a leisurely afternoon audience with popular Welsh actor Phillip Madoc on Sunday, 27 July.

The programme this year contains successful acts of the past with the return of the ever popular Festival Players performing Much Ado About Nothing, West Glamorgan Youth Orchestra and, back by popular demand, the stunning Classical Opera Supper. With a Big Band night, Jazz night, Opera at the Castle, the wonderful West Glamorgan Youth Theatre Company and interactive African drumming workshops there really is something for everyone.

In an effort to bring more variation into the programme and in recognition that 2008 is the National Year of Reading we are holding a Literature Festival Day with guest appearances from best selling authors Barbara Erskine and R J Ellory. Port Talbot actor Michael Sheen will also be appearing in his role as Ambassador for the Dylan Thomas Literature Award as this year we are proud to be hosting the official long-list announcement of the Dylan Thomas Prize.

Russell Ward, Head of Partnership and Community Development, said, “The Margam Festival continues to grow and this year will have more events than ever before. It is an important event in the cultural life of Neath Port Talbot and has developed a strong and loyal public following.”

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Derek Vaughan, said, “The great strength of the Margam Festival is the range of events that are staged. An important feature is the opportunity it gives to schoolchildren and young performers. At the other end of the scale we have established stars such Philip Madoc and Michael Sheen, who will be performing at the Festival for the first time.”
